I have been working on my final sermon for the Revival services that I wll be preaching at in Hazen, North Dakota. As, I was reading through Romans 10, jotting down notes and thoughts, a song came on called "Storm" by Lifehouse. If you have not heard of Lifehouse you need to check them out. I have not found a song yet that seemed inappriate in language, content, themes, etc. Before breaking through, Lifehouse used to lead worship at their church, even writing a couple popular praise songs, like Revolution Cry. For awhile, they would still lead worship from time to time at their church, though I do not know if they still do that.
Like a number of their songs, the song "Storm" deals with a person's relationship with God. In this case, the subject of the song is overwhelmed by the "storm." Waves are crashing, and it is were as though he were drowning in these difficult times he is facing. This person knows though that if they could just see God, that everything would be alright, he could walk on water and that God would catch him if he falls. At the end, the song goes from "everything will be alright" to "everything is alright" signifying that He knows God is with Him he has "seen" God, and that is where his trust lies.
As I listened to this song, I could not help but think of the storms I have faced. I felt exactly like the guy in the song. I was overwhelmed, drowning in the sorrow and hurt. I felt like I was barely surviving, but I knew God's purpose was bigger than that. I know and have known that life is and would never be easy, but I know God did not just bring me out here to drown and that's it. He has given purpose to me and to us all, and while the storm can be so terrifying and haunting it is not pointless. The storm has a point, a purpose. It is to make us stronger, it is to draw us closer to God. Like Peter's experience walking on water, and like the song, if we could see Jesus, everything would be alright. We could even walk on water in the midst of the storm. We wouldn't be walking on our own, but it would be by the power and the grace of Jesus we would be able to walk on water and stand strong.
As the revival services draw near, this song reminds me that God, even in the midst of the storm, is in control. It reminds me that despite opposition and suffering, that Christ is bigger than it all and that through Him we can walk in the midst of the storm. It is not that we are spared from experiencing a storm in life, or that we would be unaffected by the storm. But, despite what may be happening, when we "see" God, that is when we call on Him, trust Him, follow Him, everything will be alright. We may hurt and suffer, but in spite of it all, we are taken care of by a loving God. When we look to Him and trust Him, God brings us out of the storm refined, stronger, more dependent, and more intimate with Him.
