So, I just finished watching Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (very manly, I know). When this show first came out, I was pretty skeptical about it. Then they ran into some problems where families were having trouble keeping up with their homes and all. I became real skeptical then. But, they got that all worked out and learned from their mistakes. Well, Lindsey and I watch it every week now, and the stories that are shared, the lives that are forever changed, is incredible. Truly, people who are in need of help, are receiving it from this program. I can't help but feel that this an example for all Christians. No, we may not have tons of money to be able to donate to help building a house, furnishing it with all it's needs and what not. Or you may not have the time or ability to go do that either, but it's the principle that I am talking about. Serving others, especially those who are in dire need of help.
Not everyone who is in a desparate situation, is in need of a new house that isn't falling down, or one that meets the needs of a disabled child. But, there are many out there who need food. Some need help paying electric bills, or have kids who need clothes. Who knows why they are in the situation they are in. Maybe they screwed up along the way and are now trying to straighten their life out. Maybe there was some sort of accident. Maybe they are a hard worker, but lost their job and can't find another one. The point is, there are times where we see someone in need, and we can meet that need (or at least help) but do nothing about it. I think that disheartens Jesus. He, above all else, is the ultimate example. He died on the cross for all, washed the disciples feet, fed the 5,000, healed the lepers, and much more. He did many miracles, but it wasn't just about showing His supernatural power that came from God. It was about setting the example of service. That if we have the ability to serve others, to do good, then we should. Ultimately, it comes down to the Gospel and having a genuine relationship with God. But Christ has not only called us to a relationship with Him, but with others. That relationship with others is so much deeper and rewarding when it is through service.
One of the people they helped tonight said something pretty neat. This man, Saul, has cerebral paulsy. During his life he has overcome many obstacles. They said he wouldn't walk, get married, have a family, have a job. Well, he has all that. He now owns a coffee shop where he hires those with disabilities (different abilities is what they called it on the show. pretty neat), in order to help them expand their life, to give them purpose, to train them with job experience, to have others interact with them, etc. He said "this is what God has called me to, to help meet these needs."
I don't know if the designers on the show are Christian or not. I hope they are. Regardless though, I believe they follow the example of Christ better than most Christians. Which is pretty sad. Like I said, you don't have to do some huge project to make an impact. The littlest things can do wanders for people. Will we follow the example of Christ, and when it is in our power to do good, do it? Or, will we fail to see the opportunities in front of us?
When it is in your power, don't withhold good from the one to whom it is due. Don't say to your neighbor, "Go away! Come back later. I'll give it tomorrow"—when it is there with you. - Proverbs 3:27-28

true men watch HGTV.
This is very inspiring. I think a lot of the time we don't want to give unless we know we will get something in return and it's very selfish. I pray that God helps me come over that selfishness.
nice one rainster.
