Derek Webb

I am a big fan of this guy they call Derek Webb. He has some awesome songs. They aren't your typical songs though, not lyrics wise anyway. They just tend to cut through any fluffy wording and get to the heart of the matter. Each song is so true, too. One lyric has caught my attention lately. I have listened to Derek Webb for awhile, but this line got me:

"I am so easily satisified by the call of lovers so less wild. I would take a little cash, over Your very flesh and blood."

That's hit home lately. I think I do that just about everyday, or so it seems anyway. It's easy to get swayed by things that are, maybe not unholy or impure, but things that should not be taking priority over the things of God. It's easy to get distracted in our world today and to pursue after things that are really not near as adventerous as our Lord. We think money, fame, all the best stuff are wild and unique. The truth is, if you could ever compare a sold out life to Christ with a life that is controlled by one of these other desires, there is no comparision. God may not take you to all the exotic locations in the world, but He will take you where you need to go. God may not give you all the money in the world, but He will give you all that you need. He may not lay out your whole life before you (like we can all try to do sometimes) but He will show you what you need to know and when you need to know it. To me, following after God and seeking His will has kind of been like watching a suspense movie. I don't always know how things are going to get done, but God never fails to provide even when all hope seems to be gone. I get nervous, scared, stressed. I think God has forgotten me and that He may not follow through. Sometimes that makes me run to other things to be my hope in. But then, like the hero in these suspense films, God shows Himself to be faithful. He can take us to places we can never imagine, through things we could never dream of.

We have a wild, adventerous God; not a boring, prim and proper God like is often portrayed in our churches today. He is out of the box, unconventional; not predictable and compartmentalized like we would hope Him to be. If God were those things, well then we would have this whole life thing figured out pretty easily and we could handle it on our own for the most part. But God isn't conventional or boring. He doesn't look like us. God is bigger and wilder than our imaginations and He is dangerous. He is dangerous because He will move us out of our comfort zones. He will stretch us until we can stretch no more. He will poke us, prod us. His Words will cut us, convict us. He is dangerous because He totally rocks our world when we let Him. He is dangerous because when we hand over the reigns to Him, our life as we know looks nothing like what we were familiar with. That is a scary notion for us, to surrender control. But there is nothing greater, more adventerous, and more gratifying than to pursue after a wild, uninhibited, and everlasting God.
